About the Eighth Annual UIC Leadership Retreat

It is clear to all of us that UIC is changing as a result of the state’s ongoing financial woes. We are doing more with less State General Revenue support, and each of you is engaged in the process of contemplating even greater adaptations within your units. Interim President Ikenberry commissioned an Administrative Review and Restructuring report that will have as yet unspecified organizational implications for UIC. At the campus level we are also examining our academic and administrative organization via five Provost’s Task Forces.  And we are re-embracing diversity as a defining characteristic of UIC and as a tangible asset to the campus through the Diversity Strategic Thinking and Planning Committee (DSTPC).

What will UIC look like in 2020? So much change will challenge this institution to remain focused and on course.   For this reason, at this year’s retreat I want to take the opportunity to reaffirm our values — values that have guided UIC to major achievements despite nearly a decade of financial adversity. I would also like us all to engage in thinking proactively and creatively about how UIC can emerge from our present circumstances as an even stronger institution. To help us to focus, we will revisit the goals and values presented in the UIC 2010 Strategic Plan, and we will engage with the five Provost’s Task Forces and the DSTPC to re-envision those goals and values in a new light. The retreat is an opportunity to come together to integrate all of the ideas that are emerging.

-R. Michael Tanner, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
